Scanning Keyboards are intended to help anyone who has difficulty using a pointer, but can operate a switch. The switch must be one that emulates a left mouse button . The REACH Interface Author™ Scanning option allows you to select a key by first indicating which row the desired key is in and then which key you want in that row.
Most of the keyboards provided with REACH Interface Author™ can be turned into Scanning Keyboards by selecting the "Scanning" option in the Keyboard Menu. Also, existing scanning instructions can be changed or new scanning instructions added for new keyboards.
If you will be using scanning keyboards, be sure to check out AHF's new Smart Key™ Technology (click on Smart Key™ Technology). It helps everybody but is especially useful if you are using scanning keyboards because it only scans those letters likely to be the next letter in the word you are typing - or (depending on the options you choose) it scans likely letters before scanning unlikely letters!
