REACH Interface Author keyboards can be used in educational or training settings. One such application is the Quiz Keyboard. One advantage of using a REACH Interface Author Quiz Keyboard is that, with the appropriate speech synthesis hardware and software, questions and answers can be "read" to the student in addition to or instead of simply printed in text. This multimedia approach to learning can be helpful when teaching/testing special children or when teaching/testing under special conditions.

Using the REACH Keyboard Author, a teacher can make a key that has the written question, general topic label, or a representative picture on the key face (as defined in the "Normal" key state). When the student points at it, the question is read aloud by REACH Interface Author (as defined in the "Pointed At" key state). When the key is pressed, REACH Interface Author can print the answer and read it aloud (as defined in the "Pressed" key state).

This multimedia approach combines redundant visual (text) and auditory information to provide immediate feedback, and helps keep the student's attention. Presumably, these characteristics can be useful for some students.

To see an example of a Quiz Keyboard, load the State Capitols keyboard (states.kbd). The State Capitols keyboard presents two levels of information (see above picture). In the normal key state, two-letter state abbreviations are presented. When a key is pointed at, the name of the state appears along with an abbreviated question (i.e., "Capitol?" -- meaning "what is this state's Capitol"). Finally, when the key is pressed, the name of the Capitol is shown on the key and the answer is read (e.g., "The Capitol of New Mexico is Santa Fe.").

For another Quiz Keyboard example, load the "Two's Multiplication Table" keyboard (math2x.kbd - see picture below). This keyboard presents a numeric question on each key face in the Normal Key State (e.g., 2X2=?). When pointed at, the question is repeated, but a corresponding set of objects (small dots) is presented (so that a beginner can count them). Finally, when pressed, the answer is displayed in numeric form ("4"), displayed as a number of objects (". . . ."), and read aloud to the student ("Two times two equals four.").
